Lopers suffer another first round exit
KEARNEY, Neb. —
The No. 6 seed Missouri Western State knocked off No. 3 Nebraska-Kearney at the Central Regional of the NCAA Tournament, (-21, 21-25, -17, -22) Thursday afternoon in Marshall, Minn.
This is the fifth consecutive year UNK has been unable to win a match in the first round with the last victory coming in the second round of the 2012 regional.
The Loper defense couldn't find an answer to slow down the Griffons, who had five players accumulate double digit kills and out hit UNK by .035 points. It was that kind of a day for Missouri Western State (25-10), who also out blocked UNK by 4.0, had nine more kills and 14 more points.
Kendall Schroer, a junior, led the Lopers with 14 kills and freshman Anna Squiers was hot on her heels with 12 while hitting at a clip of .323, a team best. Tara Ziegelbein was in on seven blocks including a solo stuff.
Finishing the season at 33-4, UNK says goodbye to seniors Tara Ziegelbein, Kaitlynn Thomas, Ali Scheil, Connar Newberry, Katy Ernest and Emma Schroer. Spring ball begins in March of 2018.
