Switch to 3-4 brings new found energy to UNK defense

UNK football entering week number 4 of spring practice and the Loper players are adjusting to a new coaching staff and playbook for the 2nd time in three seasons.

Both sides of the ball receiving significant makeovers.

The Lopers are making the switch this spring from a 4-3 base to a 3-4. The new scheme is exciting players hoping to make an impact, and it all starts up front.

"The scheme is great," said defensive lineman Spencer Cook. "I love how they have us moving all the time. I love that the defensive line is not just stagnant, we're actually getting some quarterback pressure."

UNK’s defense leaving a lot to be desired last season, giving up 37.6 points per game and 414 total. Those big numbers are expected to drop with everyone's buy-in to the new format.

"Everybody is bringing a lot of energy at different positions on the field and the camaraderie between all of us is real strong. I like that," Cook says.

UNK wrapping up spring practice on April 22 at Ron and Carol Cope Stadium when they hold their annual spring game. Kickoff set for 11:30 am, followed later in the day by the Loper Football Backers banquet at 5:30 p.m.
