Sabre Dogs take series from Sodbusters
HASTINGS, Neb. —
Kam Armstrong had there runs and three hits to help Souris Valley take the rubber match from Hastings, 9-6, Thursday at Duncan Field.
Hastings went with Vinny Schmidt as the starter in game three of the series, hoping the GPAC first-team pitcher would hold off the Sabre Dogs, but he was tagged up for 11 hits and five earned runs, bringing his ERA to 4.66 on the season. In comparison, Schmidt finished his freshman season with a 0.50 ERA in 53.2 innings of work. Ryan Krolikowski worked 1.1 innings, giving up a hit and an earned run, while Payton Pocock came on to close out the final 3.0 innings, surrendering two hits and two runs while dialing up five strikeouts.
The Sodbusters had 13 hits of their own, led by Tyler Daugherty, whe went 3 for 5 and brought his average up to .571. Brooks Asher also had a three hit day and a scored couple of runs. The sophomore who plays college ball at Kansas is hitting .500 this season.
Shawn Barrowdale hit a monster shot in the third inning to nearly straight away center field. His first home run of the season was his only hit of the day, but Barrowdale has tied a league high with his eight RBI this season. The only other player in the league bringing eight runs in is Hastings outfielder Justin Henry.
Souris Valley shortshop Jack Schulder brought his batting average up to .167 knocking three runs across on his three hits and scored a run.
The Sabre Dogs improve to 3-3 overall while Hastings slipped a spot in the standings with the loss. The Busters are also 3-3 in the early goings.
