Sammy's Superheroes a success for Storm hockey

The Tri-City Storm honor seven young kids as this years "Sammy's Superheroes" (NTV News)

It was a night bigger than hockey for seven kids affected by cancer.

Storm players gave the children, affectionately known as Sammy's Superheroes, a game-day experience and auctioned off specialty jerseys after the game to raise money for pediatric cancer research. Tri-City showed tribute videos from players that participated in the experience last season. Sammy’s Superheroes Foundation is named after Sammy Nahorny, who was diagnosed with neuroblastoma in 2012.

When it came to hockey, Eric Dop did everything he could, but a goal early in the second led to a 2-0 defeat by the Muskegon Lumberjacks. Adam Brizgala made 17 saves for his second shutout of the season.

Dop, who has made eight straight starts, made 13 first-period saves and finished with 34 denials. Five minutes into the second, Andrei Svechnikov scored the game-winning tally. Svechnikov assisted on an insurance goal with fewer than three minutes left in the third.

After traveling to Lincoln next Friday, the Storm hosts Sioux Falls on Saturday, March 25 for Casino Night at 7:05 p.m.
