UNK Football: '14 Captains Named

Kearney, Neb. – Nebraska-Kearney head football coach Darrell Morris today announced the names of six players who will serve as the Loper captains for the 2014 season.

They are senior Matt Bowman (Kearney Catholic H.S.), Cole Manhart (Highlands Ranch, Colo.) and Jack Wardyn (Palmer), juniors Romero Cotton (Hutchinson, Kans.) and Bronson Marsh (Millard South H.S.) and sophomore Tyke Kozeal (Sargent).

Manhart is a captain for a second straight season. UNK's starting left tackle, he is a 2014 preseason All-American and 2015 NFL Draft hopeful.

Bowman (end) and Wardyn (tackle) join Manhart as part of a nine-member senior class. They anchor a defensive line that has been among the best in the MIAA in stopping the run the past two seasons.

Both Cotton (running back) and Marsh (quarterback) transferred into Kearney prior to last season. In five games, Marsh was 78 of 138 for 763 yards and two TD's while rushing for 428 yards and four scores. Earning honorable mention All-MIAA honors, Cotton was the featured back the last seven weeks to end with 801 yards and five TD's.

Finally, Kozeal is a rare underclassman to be chosen captain. A starting MIKE linebacker, he totaled a school-record 118 tackles last year (8.5 TFL) to earn honorable mention All-MIAA honors.
