The Tri-City Storm are off to the best start in the 17-year history of the team, according to a press release by the Storm.

The Storm defeated Sioux City 3-2 in a shootout on Saturday night to win 6 of 7 to start the regular season, a feat that had never been accomplished by any previous Tri-City team. Jake Barczewski stopped 36 of 38 shots to backstop the Storm to victory.

Brian Hawkinson scored his third goal of the season at 8:44 of the opening period to give Tri-City a 1-0 lead. The goal was assisted by Michael Koster and Michael Maloney. Despite being outshot 19-4, the Storm skated away with a one goal lead after the first period.

Sampo Ranta had the answer for Sioux City late in the second period, scoring a power play goal for the Musketeers at the 17:56 mark. It marked the first time this season the Storm have given up a power play goal. The third period opened with a Filip Forsmark power play goal at the 4:06 mark of the period. Forsmark has now scored 3 power play goals for the Storm through seven games on the season. Samo Ranta struck again in the third, scoring his fifth of season to tie the game at 2 goals.

For the first time this season, the Storm skated in extra time as the game required overtime to find a winner. No goals were scored during the 3 on 3 five-minute period, which led to a three-round shootout. After no goals in the first two rounds of the shootout, Adam Goodsir lit the lamp to give the Storm the lead in the shootout. Jake Barczewski denied Micah Miller of a game extending-goal to record his first career USHL victory.

Tri-City went 1 for 5 on the power play and 4 for 5 on the penalty kill. The win gives the Storm 12 points in the standings. Tri-City remains at the top of both the western conference and the USHL league standings.

The Storm return to action on Friday night, when they travel to Muskegon for a two game series vs. the Lumberjacks. Puck drop is scheduled for 6:15pm CT on Friday night, with the rematch game scheduled for the same time the following night.
