Kearney earns first win at state since '07

Kanon Koster showed up big with 25 points in the second half and 38 in the game to lead Kearney to a 61-50 victory over Omaha Central.

The rest of the Bearcat roster combined for eight points in the final 16 minutes.

"We've got one of the best players in the state in Kanon Koster and our guys understand our roles," said head coach Drake Beranek. "We didn't have one guy doing something they weren't capable of today."

Kearney got out to a 13-point lead at the end of the first quarter, but by halftime the lead was trimmed to one.

Coming out of the intermission, Koster connected for six field goals, one of which was good for three, and was money from the free throw line all day by hitting 10-of-12 tries in the game.

Shiloh Robinson had nine points after being quieted with his six in the first quarter.

"Just really proud of our teams toughness. We're going to play a tough team. It's March. It's Class A basketball. We're just going to do what Kearney High does and hopefully that's good enough," Beranek says.

The Bearcats next challenge is the biggest they've faced all year when they take on top ranked Papillion-La Vista. These two have not faced one another this year.

Kearney and the Monarchs get it going at Pinnacle Bank Arena Friday, 8:00 p.m. CT.
