Outdoor Files: State parks are ready for the holidays
Ralph Wall, with Nebraska Game and Parks Commission, says a number of special seasonal events are planned in our parks this month.
"One of our most popular events is Christmas at the Codys. At North Platte, every room in Buffalo Bill’s historic home is festively decorated. Guests can go on hay rack rides, enjoy cider, cookies and roasted chestnuts. Caroling. In the barn-a military tree, take pictures with Santa and a night scavenger hunt for the kids. You’ll need a daily or annual park entry permit but also an extra $8 for adults, $5 dollars children, though kids 3 and under are free. I think it’s important to add that the admission fees are 100% donated to local charities. Christmas at the Codys 5:30-8:00 p.m. on these dates: 7th-8th-14th-15th and 21st thru 23rd.
"At Mahoney State Park Saturday Dec 8th from 1:30 to 4:30 p.m. It’s Classic Christmas Day for the kids. Get photos with Santa. Decorate cookies. Take part in holiday craft activities. Tram rides through the park.
"At the Wildcat Hills Nature Center south of Scottsbluff-Gering, 10 AM Saturday December 8th is Nature’s Gifts Day. Work with natural materials to create ornaments, bird feeders and other decorative ideas for the home. Other than that park entry permit, the activities are free.
