Wood River students sell ads to purchase new scoreboards
WOOD RIVER, Neb. — Wood River Rural High School used a pull down screen as their scoreboard.
Recently, the school purchased two new 10 X 14 media boards to put in their gym.
A class was created where students are selling ads to pay for the scoreboards.
Students at Wood River reached out to businesses in the area and in Grand Island for ad space to purchase the scoreboards.
The students are split up into two classes where they make phone calls to area businesses and another where they create media content.
"All of us were like, we have to get these scoreboards because they are so cool," said Kiley Codner who is a senior at Wood River Rural High School.
Both scoreboards costs about $170,000.
Hearing back from businesses about purchasing ads is something they did not think would happen so quickly.
"We're really surprised at how well we did because we didn't expect to get that many sales," Codner said.
Abbie Philmale, who is also a senior at Wood River Rural High School, said hearing back from businesses is what motivated them.
"When we got a few yesses, it was like ok, we're really motivated now to get the scoreboards," she said.
The media team puts together the clients' ads that go on the scoreboard.
"This one will be quite the upgrade and we will be able to do player fouls also team rosters and just a lot of different things that we are excited to use it for," said Brenda Hirchert who is the media specialist at Rood River Rural High School.
Learning from this experience is something students say was most impactful.
"Talking to so many people and just learning about how to communicate and how to sell, it really helped me and it will help me in the future too," said Codner.
