Outdoor Files: Activities coming up in May


When it comes to the outdoors, there is an impressive variety of activities and subjects to be apart of. My report sure reflects that today.

Bird enthusiasts in southeast Nebraska, last minute notice, but show up at Indian Cave State Park tomorrow morning May 2nd at 730 AM. Bird viewing, some speakers, possible mist netting and leg banding part of the agenda. Bring your own lunch and beverages. Beginning Thursday and running into Saturday, the 49th annual Cornhusker Trap Shoot. Watch upwards to 2500 students grades 6-12 compete for individual and team trophies. The shooting grounds are on the northeast edge of Doniphan, just 3 miles south of I-80 exit #312.

Nebraska law requires any boat or personal watercraft operator born after December 31st 1985, to complete a boating safety course and carry the certificate. There are 3 options for completing the course including inline. Learn more at this website

Established by the legislature in 2012, the Hunters Helping the Hungry program has annually seen an increase in venison donated by hunters. That meat is later distributed to those in need. Tax deductible money donations from individuals, businesses and organizations is what pays participating processors to prepare and package the venison. Unfortunately, the donation numbers have been slipping in recent years and that can impact how much meat can be processed. As little as a one dollar gift provides 2 meals, ten dollars provides 22 meals. Learn more about this program and how you can help at

Family fishing events are where Game and Parks staff help you get started in fishing. We supply equipment and bait if you don’t have any. One such event is planned at Red Willow reservoir north of McCook this Saturday from 10-2. Meet at Kiwanis Point.
