CHAPPELL, Neb. — A former South Platte Public Schools teacher charged with sexual assault of a child has taken a plea deal.
BIG SPRINGS MAN CHARGED WITH SEXUAL ASSAULT OF CHILD
According to Deuel County District Court records, Joel Foster, 38, of Big Springs, pleaded no contest to one count of first-degree sexual assault of a child.
In exchange for his plea, prosecutors dismissed an additional count of first-degree sexual assault of a child, one count of sexual abuse by a school employee and two counts of committing intentional child abuse-no injury.
The charges stem from an investigation by the Nebraska State Patrol that began last September when troopers received information that an employee at South Platte Public Schools in Big Springs had had inappropriate contact with a student. On Thursday, an arrest warrant was issued for Foster as part of the investigation, and he was arrested Thursday afternoon.
An affidavit detailing the case is not listed in court records. However, a complaint outlining the charges says the alleged incident occurred between Jan. 1, 2022, and Sept. 14, 2022, and involved one 16-year-old child.
Foster is scheduled to appear in Deuel County District Court for sentencing on May 25.
