Dawson County Hero Flight committee in need of donations for next flight
Not all the wounds from war are visible, that's why one group in Dawson County is working to provide healing to veterans, in a very special way.
The Dawson Hero Flight committee sends Nebraska veterans to Washington D.C., so they can see memorials dedicated to their service. All of this, at no cost to the veterans.
Right now, the group is collecting applications from veterans across the area for its fifth honor flight. Committee member and Air Force veteran Barry Bauer says the experience is like no other.
"There's been several Vietnam veterans that go on these flights and they come back changed. They see the wall and there's people there that shake their hands and tell them thank you, which they didn't get before. It's a very healing experience for them," Bauer said.
Each hero flight holds 25 veterans and their escort. In total, the 3 day trip costs about $60,000. Organizers say they need your help to make the next flight happen.
