Widman Cinema open for business in Central City
The Widman Cinema is what Central City residents have been raving about all weekend since its grand opening on Friday, and what they call a gem.
The project has been in the making for years and in 2013, the Widman Cinema got the backing of the community after the State Theater closed temporarily.
Like the World Theatre in Kearney, the Widman Cinema is a non–profit organization and all workers are volunteers.
The Widman is open every day, which is unusual for people in Central City since the only other movie theater in town only shows a movie on weekends. The million-dollar theater had its grand opening over the weekend.
They offer two movies, one for kids and one for adults. Each theater has close to 100 seats in each. Manager Tina Boroviak said they wanted it to be inclusive for all ages.
"The group that had this vision wanted a place to offer great entertainment to the community. Not only kids, to give them something to do, but also the adults," she said.
Central City resident Nate Krug said it makes him proud that their small town can offer more entertainment like larger cities do. He said this kind of expansion in the town of almost 3,000 is great for the whole city.
"Obviously I'm really excited about it," he said. "We've got a lot of really cool new things going on- a new hospital, a new trail, etc., which has been fantastic, so I think this is just one of the pieces of the puzzle to see our community really thrive."
Because the only other theater in in town only has weekend shows, now that the Widman is open seven days a week Krug said he doesn’t have to drive all the way to Grand Island like he usually does. He can now conveniently see a movie at the Widman.
"I definitely will be here. We love the idea of coming in in the evening on a weekday. A lot of times I'll have a day off during the week, and you can come down and do that. So the increased hours and time during the week, will be really a great thing for our community and for communities around the area," Krug said.
