A golden retriever is back in the arms of its owners after nearly drowning in treacherous waters at a Grand Island park.

Around 2:30 p.m. Friday afternoon, the Grand Island Fire Department got called to the scene of a dog trapped in icy waters at L.E. Ray Park.

The dog's owners told the fire department their dog was chasing after a goose when it found itself trapped in the lake.

Scott Kuehl, Fire Station One Shift Commander, said he and other crews were on the scene within five minutes.

"I would say put your dog on a leash if you're worried about them chasing birds or rabbits, or ducks, or geese on the water because it could happen just like today and this had a good ending today. We were able to get here quick and make the quick rescue," Kuehl said.

The owners told GIFD they would get the dog checked by a vet.
