City council members voted to approve Grand Island's one- and six-year street plan at their regularly-scheduled meeting on Tuesday.

Public Works Director John Collins presented the plan, which includes creating a roundabout for the city's five-point intersection. The plan shows that 80% of the project will be federally funded as a safety project through the Nebraska Department of Transportation.

Other projects include resurfacing of several streets including the following:

  • Husker Highway from Highway 30 to Regal Drive
  • Engleman Road from Husker Highway to Highway 30
  • Schimmer Road from North Road to Blaine Street
  • Blaine Street from Schimmer Road to Highway 34

Improvements to Old Potash Highway were also included, focusing on North Road to Webb Road including the intersections to the north and south. The plan is to widen the roadway and improve traffic signals at the intersection to ease connectivity to other roadways.
