GRAND ISLAND, Neb -- The next stage of improvements on Grand Island High School's Memorial Stadium project is now officially under way.
The Grand Island Public School Foundation broke ground on the new two–phase project on Monday, which will build a new stadium on the west side of Memorial Field, then renovate and preserve the east side.
This $17 million project started with a substantial donation by the family of Jack Martin who taught at Grand Island Senior High and also kept score at games.
Foundation officials said the project is a community effort.
"Something of this scale brings value to Grand Island to be able to host all kinds of events and every donation helps, no matter the size," said GIPS Foundation Capital Campaign Coordinator Leigh Lillibridge. "We want the whole community to participate and be able to feel like they are part of the project."
Fundraising continues to complete funding for the project, which is slated to be finished by Fall of 2020.
