Grand Island police arrest man in multiple crashes
An 18-year-old man was arrested early Wednesday morning after police said he crashed his car multiple times while under the influence of alcohol.
The Grand Island Police Department said Jayden Hays was drunk and had a generic brand of Xanax in his possession when was driving just before 2 a.m. Officers said he struck two parked cars and then finally crashed into a tree at 16th Street and Park Avenue.
When police arrived, the engine compartment of the car was fully engulfed in flames, which then caught the tree on fire.
A family with small children was evacuated from a nearby home out of fear that the tree would spread flames to the house.
Hays was arrested on charges of possession of a controlled substance, driving under the influence, and two counts of leaving the scene of an accident.
