GRAND ISLAND, Neb. — Grand Island's airport is following through with upgrades to increase the safety of its crosswalks.
Officials with the Central Nebraska Regional Airport say they recently upgraded the pedestrian cross walk area between the Passenger Terminal and west parking lot along Sky Park Road.
Before, they say there was a constant flashing yellow light, traffic studies indicated that drivers ignored these lights as well as the speed limit reduction signs.
Now pedestrians can press a button to activate a flashing yellow strobe light to alert motorists they are crossing the road. The Airport also installed speed reductions signs reducing the speed limit from 55 mph to 45 mph in advance of the crossing as well as radar detection signs letting the motorists know how fast they are going.
