Hay bales ignite on flatbed trailer near Bertrand

BERTRAND — Two fire departments responded to a call that hay bales on flatbed trailer were on fire at 733 Road and E Road near Bertrand on Saturday.

Firefighters from Loomis and Bertrand responded to the fire call at a feedlot at 2:35 p.m. The Phelps County Sheriff's Office said crews responded with extra tankards of water, and worked to push the hay bales off the truck to prevent further damage before working to put out the remaining fire.

Part of the truck's trailer was charred along a railing, but officers said the cause of the fire is still unknown, and they didn't have an estimated total for damage to the truck and trailer.
