GRAND ISLAND, Neb. — Kids get up close with amazing animals that don't bite but watch out because they can pop.
The Grand Island Public Library packed in what may be the biggest crowd in years today.
Balloon artist “Poppin' Penelope” and her science teacher sidekick take kids on a journey of discovery to learn about some of the most interesting animals in the world.
If you missed it, they've got more programs in the weeks to come.
“This is just the beginning. We've got programs through July 31st. Every Monday is Mega Monday with programs like this,” said Children’s Librarian Laura Fentress.
Not only was Monday’s crowd bigger than anything they've done since before COVID, librarians say it's likely one of the biggest turnouts they've seen in years.
They hope kids check out a good book while they visit and encourage kids to log their reading and earn prizes during the summer reading programs.
In addition to the standard summer activities they are also offering a 7-session Summer Reading Enrichment program for children who have just finished kindergarten through 5th grade.
It’s a special program for elementary students to keep up their reading skills over the summer. Participants will enjoy presentations and activities with special guests before splitting off into peer groups to read with volunteers.
Summer Reading Enrichment is held on Tuesdays at 10:30 A.M. from June 7th through July 26th. Registration is required to attend. The registration deadline is June 7th.
