HASTINGS, Neb. — A man is in custody after deputies say he tried to break into the National Weather Service and a TV station in Hastings.
The Adams County Sheriffs Office said they arrested James Wheeler, Jr., 30, on suspicion of burglary, trespassing and criminal mischief early Friday morning.
The sheriff's office said the first call came at about 12:20 a.m. from the National Weather Service.
When deputies arrived, they said they didn't find anyone.
They said about two hours later a call came from KSNB Local4, saying someone was hiding in their back shed.
That's where they found Wheeler, along with damage to security cameras.
Police said Wheeler is being held on a $50,000 bond.
Adams County Attorney Donna Fegler Daiss said charges are expected to be filed later Friday or Monday. She said the U.S. Attorneys Office could potentially file federal charges against Wheeler because a break-in attempt at NWS is considered a federal offense.
