Shoppers brave crowds at Hilltop Mall to get last minute Christmas gifts
KEARNEY, Neb. —
The last full weekend before Christmas is here and one mall is facing more traffic than usual.
It was hard to find a parking spot as people came to Hilltop Mall in Kearney to find those last-minute Christmas gifts for family and friends.
"I have a lot of wrapping to do but after today I'm hoping to be done," said one shopper Alice Dean.
Dean said she came from Cozad and had already been at the mall for four hours.
"I still have a few more stops to make," said Dean.
Another shopper says she hasn't bought much yet.
"I always have the plan to start early and I never do. I'm always a last minute shopper," said another shopper Abby Ambler.
The property manager of Hilltop said it was by far the busiest weekend of the year.
"I think it's more so last-minute gifts. People are getting away, getting offline and coming in to do their shopping. They want to see and feel the gifts they're getting for their loved one instead of just seeing them online," said property manager for Hilltop Mall Scott Ehmke.
But one shopper said she knew what she was getting into.
"It's packed here. I was expecting it though because it is the last weekend before Christmas but it's swamped," said Ambler.
With Christmas around the corner, mall managers don't expect it to slow down anytime soon.
"Traffic is really full. It's kind of shoulder-to-shoulder out there. The parking lot is pretty full. They're parking on the edge of the curbs and things like that right now so it definitely has a buzz in the hallway when you're walking through," said Ehmke.
And if you need gift wrapping, the Hilltop Mall has you covered.
They will package your presents for a donation.
Money will benefit the "Teammates Mentoring Program."
