State Fair planning study of east side of fairgrounds

The Nebraska State Fair is gearing up to form a master plan for its grounds in the next few months.

"In the last seven years we've put about $50 million into the Fonner Park campus. Most of that has been on the west side and so we are looking at doing a study on the east side of the grounds," said Joseph McDermott, the fair’s executive director.

McDermott said that study would include people from the city of Grand Island and the equine community.

He said the fair is interested in building a major equine complex in the future.

Fair officials hope new projects can be a part of the Grow Grand Island initiative.

Recently, the Grand Island City Council approved an agreement with the group to fund them through a food and beverage tax.
