A man believed to be the mastermind behind the string of robberies across the country is set to be back in a Dawson County courtroom on Monday, facing three different criminal charges.

Richard Lee Gathercole is charged with two counts of possession of a stolen firearm and one count of theft by receiving.

It links back to an attempted traffic stop on June 19.

According to the FBI, the Montana man shot at a Kansas State Trooper during a high-speed chase that ended with him being arrested by the Dawson County Sheriff's Office.

The FBI also believes Gathercole is responsible for the series of six bank robberies linked to the "AK-47 bandit."

The robberies happened over three years in five states, including a 2014 robbery in Nebraska City.
