YRTC assaults staff member, but overall incidents decline

(NTV News)

A teen at Kearney's Youth Rehabilitation Treatment Center assaulted a staff member, sending him to the hospital on Monday.

According to the Nebraska Department of Health and Human Services, the assault occurred between one teen and two staff members. One staff member sought medical attention at Kearney Regional Medical Center after the incident.

The teen involved in the most recent incident is currently in the Dickson Behavioral Stabilization Unit and will be subject to evaluation. Reports concerning the incident have been forwarded to Nebraska State Patrol and the county attorney's office for further investigation.

Even with the recent assault, the department said overall incidents were down in 2017 compared to the previous year.

"The safety of YRTC-K staff, the community, and the youth is always a priority. The number of youth-on-staff assaults at YRTC-K decreased significantly (nearly 50 percent) in 2017 when compared to the previous year (2016)," Jennifer Brantley, public information officer for the DHHS, said. "This is due, in part, to the swift action of staff members, administration, a culture of mutual respect, and appropriate discipline when infractions occur."
