LINCOLN, Neb. — Nebraska Senator Tom Brewer's LB 514 is set to be discussed on the agenda for next Tuesday. The bill focuses on voter ID requirements, including the acceptance of state government documents, college or military IDs.
Brewer's proposal also allows individuals without an ID to cast provisional votes if they face reasonable hindrances like disabilities, illnesses, or religious objections to being photographed.
However, Senator Julie Slama, who led the 2022 campaign for voter ID, opposes Brewer's plan and has introduced a stricter alternative.
Slama's proposal includes a provision that mandates ID holders to opt into a system for verifying citizenship when used for voting, a move criticized by opponents who anticipate potential lengthy and costly legal battles.
Updates will be posted as it happens.
