NSP shares tips for safe driving this summer

KEARNEY, Neb. — Summer has arrived, and with it comes the start of the summer travel season. As Nebraskans hit the road, the Nebraska State Patrol is emphasizing the importance of safe driving practices for all motorists.

Colonel John Bolduc, Superintendent of the Nebraska State Patrol, highlighted the significance of Memorial Day weekend as one of the busiest travel times of the year. He emphasized the dedication of troopers to ensuring the safety of Nebraska roads and urged travelers to plan ahead and exercise caution while sharing the road.

As part of their efforts, troopers will be actively patrolling the state as part of the annual Click It or Ticket campaign, which began on May 15 and continues until June 4.

AAA predicts that more than 37 million people will be embarking on road trips of at least 50 miles this Memorial Day weekend.

To prepare for a summer road trip, here are some essential travel tips:

• Ensure your vehicle is road-ready: Check your tires, windshield wipers, and other vital components to ensure your vehicle is in proper working condition for a safe journey.
• Plan ahead: Allow extra time for your trip to account for increased traffic volume on the roads.
• Follow traffic safety laws: Adhere to posted speed limits, use turn signals when changing lanes, maintain a safe following distance, and observe all traffic regulations.
• Drive sober: With alcohol often playing a role in Memorial Day celebrations, plan ahead for a sober driver or alternative transportation for a safe trip back home.
• Stay alert: Avoid distractions and fatigue while driving. Put your phone away and make sure you are well-rested to stay attentive on the road.
• Buckle up: Wearing your seatbelt significantly increases your chances of surviving a crash by 45%. Always wear your seatbelt for every trip.
