Athlete of the Week: GICC's Collin Toner
The great Bobby Jones once said, "golf is a game played on a 5–inch course, the distance between your ears." GICC senior golfer Collin Toner has mastered that aspect of the game and much more.
"Everything comes easy to him. I guess I don't know how to describe it. It's fun to watch him play. He's just, he understands the game. He doesn't let a lot of things happen to him," said head coach Craig Rupp.
Toner has been on a tear recently. Last week he came in first at the Holdrege Invite after shooting a 71 in tough conditions.
"The course has two different nines. The front 9 is really tight with a bunch of trees so you have to hit it straight," said Toner. "The back nine is pretty wide open but it's longer so you really have to bring your whole game and just be ready for anything. Thankfully I brought my game."
Collin would follow that up with a 78 in the St. Cecilia invitational finishing third just two days later. His short game provided a spark when he needed it the most.
"If he does ever miss a green, it's usually chip up and 1 putt for him," said Rupp. "Lately his short game has really saved him. I shouldn't say save him, it's just been one of the better parts of his game."
Collin has placed in the top 20 the last two years at the state tournament. He hopes for an even better finish to end his high school career.
