The last time the Minden Boys track team won a district championship, Bill Clinton was entering his 2nd year in office. The Whippets broke that streak last week taking home the B–5 district championship by a whopping 30 points.

"We never talked about it, not one time this year", stated head coach Shawn Wheelock. "We never mentioned it to the kids. I think they knew and we knew that we had a pretty good team. I don't think a lot of teams really paid attention to us, but at the meet they definitely knew who the whippets were."

Minden was able to take home the hardware, because of a balanced team that doesn't lack in depth.

"We're light in the pole jump. We don't have a pole vaulter. That's the only two events that we're not strong in," said Wheelock. "We just cover everything really well and we just have some pretty big hitters. We had 6 district champions. So that says something about the squad's high quality."

One of the Whippets strengths this season has been their sprinters like Chase Smith. The Junior finished 1st in the 400 meter, while also placing 3rd in the 200 and 100.

"I was really focused on that 400 trying to beat one of my good friends from GI and hoping that I could stick him out", Smith said. "Then just focus on that 4x1 and our handoffs so we could get my other three teammates down to State. and get all that done."

Minden now turns their attention to Omaha where they'll have 8 athletes hungry to find success at the state meet.
