Achtermann hits exclusive list as Loper baseball All-American

Loper junior Alex Achtermann hits a single to center field for UNK in an April 11, 2018 contest at Memorial Field in Kearney, Neb.

Junior Alex Achtermann has been named a 2018 third-team All-American by the NCBWA (National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association).

The Denver native is the sixth Loper in the NCAA Division II era to be named to one of the three baseball All-American teams. He was chosen as a "utility player." The other two All-American teams, ABCA (American Baseball Coaches Assoc.) and CCA (Conference Commissioners Assoc.), will be announced in the coming weeks.

The MIAA and NCBWA Central Region Player of the Year, Achtermann started games at pitcher, first base, third base, right field and designated hitter. Playing in 49 games he finished at .413 with 13 doubles, 15 home runs and 57 RBI's. Scoring a team-best 56 runs and having a team-high 147 bases, Achtermann also led UNK in slugging percentage (.714) and on-base percentage (.481).

A left handed batter but a right handed pitcher, Achtermann led the MIAA in three offensive categories. On the mound, he posted a 6-1 record and a 4.45 ERA over 11 starts. He fanned 55 in 62.2 innings and maintained a .915 fielding percentage as well.

Senior first baseman Zach Shannon from Delta (Miss.) State is the NCBWA National Player of the Year, LeMoyne (N.Y.) junior Josiah Gray is the nation's top pitcher with Chris Ramirez from Illinois-Springfield the Coach of the Year.
