Broncos drop two more, stretch hits nine

Hastings College freshman Kyra Maguire warms up before taking on Mount Marty College, April 12, 2018 (KHGI)

The doubleheader on Thursday against Mount Marty started in favor of the Hastings College softball team, but it did not end well, with the Lancers capitalizing on late mistakes in game one en route of a sweep of the Broncos by the score of 6-4 and 1-0.

Corrin Ziepke (SR/Omaha, NE) got the offense going for the Broncos (7-25, 1-7 GPAC) in the bottom of the 1st inning, as with a 1-0 count and two outs in the inning, Ziepke hit a solo shot to left field for a 1-0 lead for the Broncos.

Mount Marty answered back with a run in the 2nd inning wit a pair of walks, a single, and an error that got the run in to make it a 1-1 tie.

In the 4th inning, Jackie Elliott (SR/Westminster, CO) broke the tie with a single shallow down the right field line that scored Josie Bumgardner (JR/Hastings, NE). Haleigh Cunningham (SO/St. Paul, NE) padded the lead with a fielder's choice that brought Kirsten Abbott (FR/Hastings, NE) home to make it a 3-1 lead for the Broncos.

In the 5th inning, the Lancers got it to within a run with a two-out home run to make it a 3-2 game.

Bumgardner got it back to a two-run game in the bottom of the 5th inning when she scored on an Abbott single.

Going into the 7th inning, Hastings still held a 4-2 lead, but Mount Marty was not going to go down without a fight. Hastings surrendered another pair of walks and a single to load the bases with only one out, and the Lancers tied it with two bases-loaded walks. A two-out, two-run single gave Mount Marty the eventual 6-2 final score.

The only run-producing offense in game two came in the top of the 4th inning when a leadoff double and a single got runners on the corners. A sacrifice fly got the runner from third into home and gave Mount Marty a 1-0 lead, all the Lancers needed to get the win.

Hastings will look to end their current nine-game losing streak when they get back to action on Tuesday when the College of Saint Mary Flames come to town for a 5 p.m. & 7 p.m. doubleheader.
