'Busters beaten again by Pioneers

Western Nebraska has Hastings' number following a fifth consecutive victory over the Sodbusters, 5-4, Tuesday at Duncan Field.

The Pioneers have handed Hastings five of its ten losses this season.

Luke Coker, who only had one hit in the contest, doubled in the top of the ninth and Luther Woullard scored from first base to give the Pios a go-ahead run they did not relinquish. Woullard was 2 of 4 with a couple RBI and the lone run.

Vinny Schmidt got roughed up in the first inning when he gave up three runs to the Pioneers before he even got a second out. Beau Bratton hit a two-run triple and scored a run in the next at-bat on a Woullard ground out to third. Schmidt settled in from there and only allowed one run and one hit over the next five innings. The Hastings, Neb. native finished with seven strikeouts and his ERA stands at 3.74 this season.

Hastings scored runs in its first and second at-bats, starting with a Breyden Eckhout grounder to short, allowing Tyler Daugherty to touch home and make it 3-1 Pioneers.

Shawn Barrowdale got the first of his two RBI on the afternoon when he advanced to first because of an error by the second basemen, allowing Austin Elder to score after leading off with a triple in the bottom of the second.

Trailing 4-2 in the bottom of the sixth, Barrowdale hit a sacrifice fly to center, bringing his RBI total to 12 this season. Brooks Asher hit a single in the next at-bat on a drawn-in infield to make it 4-4 when Elder scored his second run of the day.

The Sodbusters (7-10) embark on an eight-game road trip through the Dakotas, starting with a two-game set at Spearfish, S.D. The first game is being played Wednesday at 7:35 p.m. CT
