The Tri-City Storm announced on Friday that the team was selected to host the USHL/NHL Top Prospects game on Tuesday, Jan. 9.

The game will feature 40 top-prospect players from the United States Hockey League, and Kearney will host team owners and executives from 17 USHL teams, as well as scouts from all 31 National Hockey League teams.

Tri-City Storm owner Kirk Brooks said he got an email letting him know they had won the bid against several other cities, but he had to keep quiet until Friday’s announcement.

“It was a lot of work on the visitor’s authority and ourselves, we put together a plan to try to bring it here,” Brooks said. “Your hopes are pretty slim, being the smallest market in the NHL, but we did it.”

“Kearney deserves it, the fans here in Nebraska deserve it, and I can’t wait,” Brooks said.

Kearney Visitors Bureau Lynelle Fritzen said the game will bring quite a bit of business and visitors to the area.

"Sports tourism is at the hottest its ever been in the hospitality industry, and this is a great opportunity for Kearney to continue to highlight ourselves as a great sports destination in the state of Nebraska," Fritzen said.
