The Kearney High Bearcats are close to opening the 2018 campaign and it is crunch time.

The team is starting to feel it, especially head coach Drake Beranek.

"It's just the way he is. He is an intense guy. We just have to absorb it and get some energy from it and hopefully just pick up our mood," said senior Carson Schwarz.

Beranek is using his high intensity to get his players motivated, and while some players might not respond kindly to being yelled at, coach Beranek's team embraces it and uses it to push themselves farther.

"Our staff is really fortunate that we have kids that want to be coached. They want to learn and they accept my emotions at times. And usually they respond pretty well to it and it's a credit to them. I can get kind of fiery and feisty. It's just my nature and who I am but our kids do a good job responding to that," said Beranek.

The Bearcats hope that intensity translates onto the court against Bellevue West on Thursday.
